Staying Home
Sarah Mashburn | The Future of Aging Blog | AAHSA
Helen’s story is pretty powerful. I could tell it you, but I think it’s important you hear it from the source. Then, you’ll know why “home” can take on a new meaning for seniors.
Cold Sore Virus Linked to Alzheimers
University of Manchester
The virus behind cold sores is a major cause of the insoluble protein plaques found in the brains of Alzheimer’s disease sufferers, University of Manchester researchers have revealed.
They believe the herpes simplex virus is a significant factor in developing the debilitating disease and could be treated by antiviral agents such as acyclovir, which is already used to treat cold sores and other diseases caused by the herpes virus. Another future possibility is vaccination against the virus to prevent the development of the disease in the first place. Read More >>
People Don't Believe Alzheimer's Can Be Diagnosed Or Treated
Gretchen Heuring | 11.18.08
There is a stream of new information and medical breakthroughs that effect the health and wel-being of matures. There is a lot of misinformation too. I think there might be so much that even doctors can't keep up so it's up to us to learn as much as we can if we're worried about something. Read More >>
Older People Are Less Optimistic, More Realistic
Christian Jarrett | Research Digest Blog | 11.07.08
They say we tend to view the past through rose-tinted spectacles but it seems that is far from a universal rule. According to psychologists in America our views on our past and future happiness change as a function of where we are in our lives.
From a survey of over 3000 American adults conducted at two time points spaced nine years apart, Margie Lachman and colleagues found that younger and middle-aged people tended to underestimate their past happiness and to overestimate their future happiness - probably because to do so helps motivate them to strive for a better life.

Wall Street's 'historic swindle' hurts elderly most
Saul Friedman | Gray Matters | Newsday | 11.01.08
While I understand that a bailout of the financial services industry was necessary, older Americans, many of whom have been through the Great
Depression, may have to sacrifice hopes for their own bailouts in the next administration.
There is a fair chance this banking and credit crisis may force cuts or postponement to the expansion of domestic programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, education, child health and the like, just at the time we - and the economy - need them most.
Much of the suffering from this crisis already has fallen heavily on older people. Retirees have lost millions in IRAs and savings plans that they have been counting on for income, and we cannot know if or when the market will recover. Bankruptcies among the elderly are climbing. And out-of-pocket medical and home-heating costs this winter are heading skyward. More

University of California Researchers Discover Vitamin B3 Reduces Alzheimer's Symptoms, Lesions
UC Irvine starts clinical trial on nicotinamide effect in Alzheimer’s patients
Irvine, Calif., November 4, 2008 An over-the-counter vitamin in high doses prevented memory loss in mice with Alzheimer’s disease, and UC Irvine scientists now are conducting a clinical trial to determine its effect in humans.
Nicotinamide, a form of vitamin B3, lowered levels of a protein called phosphorylated tau that leads to the development of tangles, one of two brain lesions associated with Alzheimer’s disease. The vitamin also strengthened scaffolding along which information travels in brain cells, helping to keep neurons alive and further preventing symptoms in mice genetically wired to develop Alzheimer’s.
